I started with cutting rubber components and trying to piece them together. I found that this didn’t fully represent what the story that I was trying to tell. I kept on with my design process and I then decided to use polymer clay to shape the shank of the rings, and I realised that I liked the contrast of the rubber material and the clay. I also used various glues, pigments, and resins to complete the rest of the ring. I found that using quick drying resin was essential to my process because it allowed me to get results fast and it also acts as a sealant for the rest of the objects. I did encounter a few problems along the way with the material process. For a while I was trying to use and find different glues that would hold the rubber pieces together but that would also be visually appealing. That’s when I stumbled across the resin and it was successful. The resin was able to give my pieces a ‘wet’ look that seemed to translate well. I think that the rings were mostly successful but I always believe that there is room for growth. I can now work on changing the ring shank shapes. I also would like to see a contrast in the ring shank and the top of the ring. I will try to design on Rhino a ring shank and a bezel and 3D print it as a sample. I did learn that the more unplanned some of the construction of the pieces, the better. I believe that there are a lot of possibilities for this collection.
Wow- these photos are amazing- the pieces really feel "alive." I think you are at a good place with analyzing your work- what you have accomplished, and what you will crystalize to sharpen future pieces. Looking forward to what comes next!
